A delegation of Kenyan Cabinet Secretaries is headed to the United Kingdom for the first ever-Global Disability Summit to be co-hosted by Kenya and the UK in collaboration with International Disability Alliance among other partners. The summit will take place on July 24th at the Olympic Park in London.
Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Ukur Yatani who leads the delegation says the summit is a testimony of the bondage between Kenya and the United Kingdom.
“It will cover significant areas on addressing stigma and discrimination, economic empowerment and education inclusion,” Yatani said.
Adding that, “Historically, we share so much and we are grateful to share the same platform and address the world from one platform.”
The Cabinet Secretary for Transport Infrastructure, Urban Development and Housing James Macharia whose ministry is crucial to disability inclusion is also among the delegation. It is estimated that Kenya has a total of 6.5 million persons with disability.
Another Cabinet Secretary on the list is Henry Rotich in charge of the Treasury as the summit aims to address the gaps in disability inclusion and government’s commitment to the same in terms of finances.

“We wanted a co-chaired summit with a developing country from the start and we chose Kenya because Kenya has done some great things on disability and has some great disability role models,” Nic Haily said.
The Global Disability Summit is expected to accelerate the efforts by various stakeholders to live to their commitment on disability inclusion.
